the story:
An elixir of mystery and revelation, transformation and creation, made with fig fruits gathered in Florida, fig leaves from NYC and Florida, pear fruits and leaves harvested in NYC, and an essence of fig flowers made in communion with Florida sun and springs. Full body force. Fig offered themselves for this work a bit over a year ago. The aroma of their leaves, unmistakable and enchanting, agreed to be encapsulated and furthermore shared — such is the trajectory of Fig and Pear’s presence the world over. Though they are thought to originate somewhere in the Persian Gulf, it is known that Figs have adapted well to warm, temperate regions, having an extensive history throughout the Mediterranean into Africa, the Caribbean, Florida, the USA, and other locations that support their growth. The lesson of Ficus carica is one of resilience which it teaches by growing even within what some would deem ‘unfavorable’ conditions. Ficus are hardy and teach us strength & perseverance, nourish us with sweetness. Figs build blood and body, clear stagnation in colon & womb, make room for the new. The true fruits of the Fig are the seeds inside — a fact which offers us a glimpse as to the vibrational profile of this plant loaded with creative power and the potential of many forms. This is the fruit that greets us at the crossroads of plentiful inspiration yet needing direction, it offers the vision of what could be. This plant as a whole possesses great medicine for the reproductive and respiratory regions, facilitating our capacity to breathe life into what we are creating. In Ayurveda, the fig fruits, bark, and leaves are used to cleanse the blood and promote fertility. Figs are also deeply connected to the water element by their demulcent qualities which work to soothe inflammation throughout the body and have a relaxing effects on the throat and lungs. In a study with melanated folk living in Michigan, it was reported that a great majority of them use fig juice to treat soreness of throat and irritation in breathing.
Similarly to the Ficus, Pears / Pyrus have experience and been experienced in many regions. Some early documentation of usage includes a ferment of their juices in Italy and around the Mediterranean. Even without such historical reference one can assume that Pear and Fig have crossed paths at certain points in their travels and through a myriad of recipes. The synergistic action of Figs with Pears is evident — as food medicines they have similar effects and impacts on the body and contain some of the same minerals & vitamins (such as magnesium, phosphorus, calcium, and iron) which support everyday physical processes, landing in us with the vow of healthful bounty — the invigorating power of this combination is felt head to toe. In general, they are both late summer to autumn fruits and offer us the waters needed to transition into the airiness that the cooler months bring after the heat of summer months. Pear is nutritive and provides us sweet sustenance, helping us feel cared for and supported through movement and change. When we are coming out of a period of burnout, stagnation, depression, or exhaustion, Pear imparts a sustained surge of vitality. The fruit clears heat in the body and serves as a perfect antidote to the remnants of summertime inflammations. I have a memory of my mother, livid, walking to the kitchen for a pear and sitting on the couch with it, pensive, her demeanor and anger gradually transformed, witnessed in her sigh-song & her shoulders relaxing with the release of tension — indeed it was late August. The Pear has always been her favorite fruit, and she has always been an intuitive eater. A drop of Memory’s Harvest on the tongue, a hand on my chest, a deep breath. This fruit touches upon several meridians in the body and are especially ideal for assisting and liberating the liver which holds anger, the kidneys & the fear it stores, and the heart with its lingering grief. Because Pear trees can live to more than 200 years, the Chinese regarded them as the Tree of Immortality and Prosperity. Pear and Fig have a wealth of information & impressions by virtue of their extensive existence. What they offer is as diverse as the needs, desires, and cravings of those who love and enjoy them.
Incorporating essences into extracts always feels like adding another level of Spirit to the potion. Fig flower essence helps to facilitate past life / parallel timespiral recall and ingression. It helps us to retrieve what feels lost or taken, supports us in processes of reclamation, restoration, and regeneration. This essence has a resonance within the craniosacral region, enhancing memory and cognition, helping us conceive and create with ease.
This formula is a collection of times, spaces, ideas, promises, recipes, waters, nutrients, stories. The land codes from the Southeast and Northeast USA serve to bridge a gap in the histories remembered, our own and those of the territories we live with and on. It was crafted using a Kiskeyan method of preparing fruits combined with a basic oxymeli format, rendering a potent concoction. The effects are immediate, pronounced, long-lasting, worth sitting / moving / creating / being with. This potion is an invitation to deep study and remembrance.
