Sun Bu'er's Poem: Summer Elixir
Sun Bu'er's Poem: Summer Elixir
scripture:
Before our body existed,
One energy was already there.
Like jade, more lustrous as it's polished,
Like gold, brighter as it's refined.
Sweep clear the ocean of birth and death,
Stay firm by the door of total mastery.
A particle at the point of open awareness,
The gentle firing is warm. — from “Gathering the Mind” by Sun Bu’er

the story:
The Summer is the fire that draws us out and in to the light of the Sun. Inherently, Summer has the power of attraction through luminosity. In the process of Womb Way, the Summer is the season when one becomes aware of the Mother within — when we can clearly perceive our magnitude and all of the variety of fruit that can come from the seeds planted. Like the Sun, we become ever aware of the power of the creator within. We become Magician and the Wheel of our own Fortune. Sun Bu’er, one of the seven Taoist masters and the only woman in recorded history to have become a Taoist master (this due to the repression of women), is a great example of magnifying our solar medicine while in operation with the influence of lunar dispositions. Sun Bu’er lived for years as a wealthy woman, married and with three children, and at 51 years she decided to become a nun and serve as a Taoist priest, ‘abandoning’ her duties as a mother and wife to realize her spiritual calling. Before this, she had already been engaged in her personal expressions through the art of calligraphy and the writing of poetry. Through her life as one of the Seven Perfected she wrote several poems which were used in her instruction of the Dao, alongside alchemical works outlining proper breathing and meditation techniques, circulation of the Qi, and even how to master one’s menstrual cycle. Sun Bu’er, through her devotion, became a symbol of liberty and for many she has served as Matriarch in the world of spirit. With Sun and her works in mind, this elixir came to be. Initially, it was considered the “Inner Elixir of Tranquility” as one of Sun’s titles was "Serene One of Clarity and Tranquility", and as the crafting process continued and the essences of jade and gold stepped forward to be included, one of her poems came to mind, and it felt quite natural that this potion capture the essence of metaphor and meaning in the poem “Gathering the Mind”. The essences of jade and gold serve as primary guiding forces here. Gold essence is naturally attuned to the solar frequency. Aiding in restoring self-esteem and self-love, while strengthening confidence in our gifts and creative powers, gold essence is the elixir of the alchemist able to transmute and refine. It is one very potent for the work of balancing intuition and logic, enabling us to flow with grace in our duties, earthly and spiritual. Jade contains a similar capacity and also holds the frequency of easing us into the present moment, enabling creation to flow with intention yet without attachment to a particular result, knowing that its medicine will be felt where and when it needs to be. Jade has been considered a beauty aid due to its ability to soften tension in the muscles, including the facial muscles, promoting beauty and grace, making this elixir particularly effective for the artists who walk in beauty, with expressions for the eyes to behold. With all the fire here, there is something very softening about this formula. Oatstraw and Linden are clear indicators of that. Oatstraw heals grief, so when we are working through things that we need to let go, Oatstraw provides relief. Like water, Oatstraw promotes an energy of ebb and flow, nourishing us where needed, reminding us that it is okay to just exhale. Linden is known to have similarly calming effects, providing coolness in inflamed conditions and even serving as a relief when inner heat manifests as physical irritation. Linden, or Tilia or “Tila” as we call it in Kiskeya, is rich in antioxidants and helps to eliminate dead cellular disinformation from the body, affording us a great deal of rejuvenation and even serving as a reset to the system. In silent and mindful workings with Tila and Hawthorn, we see their benefit on both the cardiovascular and digestive system. Traditional Chinese Medicine formulas often employ the use of Hawthorn as a digestive tonic, while in the West they are more regarded for matters of the heart. Corazoncito, Little Heart, as I like to call Hawthorn, is considered to be safe, effective for just about any heart condition, and have very low toxicity. This accomplice alleviates insomnia without the sedative effects of many sleeping medications. Yet, truly, this combination of Hawthorn, Linden, and Oatstraw provides more of a receptive space for inspiration to create. The grounding into the creative centers comes through the powers of Red Raspberry and Blessed Thistle leaves. Red raspberry leaves are very particular for the womb space, toning, strengthening, lifting, and tightening; while Blessed Thistle leaves mobilize the liver and call for the check of balance within both womb and liver. Blessed Thistle leaves are also considered to be ideal for postpartum as a stimulator of breast milk production through their ability to get the correct hormones in motion. Red raspberry leaves enhance the nutritional quality of the milk, all the while contributing to a flow in supply. In other terms, all of these are medicines of the heart, the heat, the warmth, the summer, the light that attracts and brings loved ones close. Sun Bu’er’s Poem is a potion for the creators, healers, teachers, and mothers, alike — the all-encompassing being, transcendent and grounded, evolving and true.
